Alexandra, affectionately known as Alex, is a township rich in history and one that never sleeps. Due to its over-population, the streets are full of life, with people going about their day.
Otherwise referred to as “Gomorrah”, this township was the backdrop location to my recent photo shoot, its shantys and dust roads which, if could talk, would have so many stories to tell.
Along with makeup artist/student Mihlali Ndamase, we got to work on the streets and next to spaza shop fronts – I, dressed in a midnight blue lace dress overlaying cream white coloured material, and her, in a two piece with black and white vertical lines.
My body hugging dress was short enough to show some leg yet elegant enough for me to be considered a dime. The look was accessorised with big diamante hoop earrings and a pair of strappy black patent heels.
While Mihlali was dressed in an off the shoulder mid-riff top that had a frill detail at the top that flowed down to resemble a tutu. She also wore high waisted bootleg pants which gave the outfit an illusion of a one piece jumpsuit.
We both completed our looks with eye catching red undertoned lipstick.
We used props such as car tyres and a classic blue and white bakkie, both remnants of old Alex days, transformed into art pieces. This captured the attention of some of the local African princes in the area who were not camera shy and wanted to be included in one of the fashion looks.
Pushing the boundaries and fun was the theme of our duo shoot, and by combining the old with the new and the unrefined with the sophisticated, we managed to do just that!
